The affordances of enhanced viewer-made-participant experience, immersed in a composite visuality superimposed over the “real world”, have already begun to inspire.

Deadline for proposals / abstracts extended to 14. May !

Today, the digital augmentation to personal worlds and public spaces revolutionises how we experience both each other and ourselves. With historically unparalleled acceleration, photographic technology is ever-more immersive and interactive. This principally visual medium can react dynamically and blend realistically with our environment in real-time to add layers of novel data (across sensory modalities auditory, haptic and olfactory). Thus, with the application of the augmented photograph within a smartphone app, social network, or some other channel, our perceptual-cognition becomes increasingly embedded (between our interactions) and extended (beyond the organism).

The affordances of enhanced viewer-made-participant experience, immersed in a composite visuality superimposed over the “real world”, have already begun to inspire: visual activism, protest representation, and contested identities; photo and documentary journalism; counter-information and dataveillance; remediation or reconceptualization for the iconic historical imaginary; family as well as social histories by way of shifting album paradigms; and other areas of inquiry.

Membrana #4 seeks to excite a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and multi-perspectival exploration into the digitally augmented photograph and the phenomenology of its image. To us, the notion of augmentation combines the indexical qualities of the “traditional” photographic image with “new” digital forms and functionalities. We seek contributions that go beyond exploring augmentation as innovation of a post-photographic idea of reality itself, and address the question of how might we use the augmented apparatus not just to document the world, but also to give it new meanings?

We invite textual and visual contributions that explore the notion of augmentation from (but not limited to) the following perspectives:

  • epistemologies of the augmented image (in scientific and applied research areas)
  • phenomenology of the augmented image (computer, tablet, telephone screen – the surface of a photograph)
  • augmented photography in social media (“everyday” augmented photography: selfies, smartphones, and social networks)
  • digital photograph in mixed, augmented, and virtual reality environments (in-game photography, advertising, branding, and marketing)
  • computer-generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects (VFX) in animation, film, and games
  • the augmented self – porous identity boundaries
  • augmented photography aesthetics: seeing, perceiving and mediating vision (embodied and extended cognitive perception, interactivity, immersion, processuality)
  • augmentation of photography & scientific uses (computer vision, machine learning, and neural networks; e.g., automated facial expression recognition, virtual diagnostics, smart spaces, wearable technologies)
  • activism, counterveillance, and hacktivism using augmented photography (socio-cultural-political aspects, general implications)
  • augmented photography and arts (media art, fine art augmented photography; graphics editing and digital painting; intersections between material aspects of “traditional” art forms and “new” media art)
  • social and cultural aspects of augmentation (the notions of panopticon, panopticonism)
  • augmenting the photographic gaze (historical construction of vision, phenomenology of the image, transformation in the nature of visuality in developments in the technology of photography)

Format of contributions

  • Essays, theoretical papers, overview articles, interviews (approx. 14.000 characters with spaces), visuals encouraged.
  • Short essays, columns (approx. 6.000 characters with spaces), visuals encouraged.
  • Photographic projects and artwork: proposals for non-commissioned work or samples of work.

Contributions will be published in the English edition – magazine Membrana (ISSN 2463-8501) as well as in the Slovenian edition – magazine Fotografija (ISSN 1408-3566). Magazine Fotografija is in ERIH PLUS database.
