Carole Baker
Carole Baker je profesorica in fotografinja, ki že od leta 1991 deluje v višjem šolstvu, na Univerzah v Sunderlandu, Derbyju, Edinburghu, Napieru in Plymouthu. Odkar je leta 2001 doktorirala, se v praktičnih raziskavah osredotoča na reprezentacije nečloveških živali in na implikacije posthumanistične in nove materialistične teorije. Svoja dela je razstavljala v VB, ZDA, na Japonskem in Cipru. Trenutno se pri ustvarjanju drži kritične realistične metode predane preiskovalne prakse, delno umetniške, delno dokumentarne, delno filozofske refleksije, ki fotografijo in besedilo uporablja za preučevanje oblasti, drugačnosti in marginalizacije. Za teoretično podlago se naslanja na dela Deleuza in Guattarija, Foucaulta, Serresa, Baradove in Massumija.
Esej je navdihnila vse večja pozornost, ki jo kritiki in umetniki v posthumanizmu posvečajo predmetu nečloveške živali, in pa vedoželjnost glede raziskovanja fotografskih praks, ki bi potencialno lahko doprinesle k tovrstnim poskusom. Raziskava postmodernističnih umetniških praks je razkrila dramatičen premik v pristopanju k predmetu nečloveške živali, kar v bistvu označuje prehod od skeptičnega, čustveno distanciranega, v teoriji utemeljenega nabora praks k takšnim, ki so čustveno angažirane, afektivne in etično odzivne. S tem nočem reči, da je to značilno za vse posthumanistične fotografske prakse; ni malo kritičnih piscev, ki kompetentno pišejo o globalnih omrežjih, nečloveški fotografiji, abstrakciji vida. Sama pa raje preučujem fotografske prakse, ki so vtkane v sočutje, velikodušnost in odgovornost. Pri tem ne gre za povratek k modernističnemu pojmovanju umetnika in njegove stvaritve, temveč za apel po produktivnih medsebojnih odnosih, ki bi temeljili na enakosti, in po eksperimentiranju, ki bi potencialno lahko privedlo k novim načinom bivanja
