The tandem Ena rola filma (One Roll of Film), whose members are Aljaž Celarc and Eva Pavlič Seifert, describes itself on their webpage as an independent DIY project from Slovenia with love for new ideas in artistic production and practice. They are self-publishing foto-zines (publications with photos of one or more authors that can be understood as an exhibition in the form of a small booklet). Their definition of their practice is connected with the definition of zines – self-publishing and enthusiasm are almost obligatory in this scene. The popularity of zines and self-publishing on the rise again, but this time it is more connected with the building of identity and control over the whole process than with the underground and the necessity of spreading ideas. Self-publishing enables more experiments and greater quickness without institutional machinery. Today’s paradoxical rise of self-published print can be to a great extent explained through the prism of retro-nostalgie and the need for defining and establishing oneself.
