Membrana is a contemporary photography magazine dedicated to promoting a profound and theoretically grounded understanding of photography. Its aim is to encourage new, bold, and alternative conceptions of photography as well as new and bold approaches to photography in general. The magazine builds upon the long tradition of publishing Slovenian language magazine Fotografija (published since 1997) as well as on long tradition of critical and investigative approach cherished by its editors.
Membrana publishes a wide range of contributions, ranging from interviews to theoretical articles, essays on contemporary photography, columns, regional portfolios, exhibition and book reviews. Positioning itself in the space between scholarly magazines and popular publications, it offers an open forum for critical reflection on the medium, presenting both analytical texts and quality visuals. The magazine is published bi-annually in the summer and winter in English language by Slovene non-profit institute Membrana.
Fotografija Magazine (published in Slovenian language)
Slovenian contemporary photography magazine Fotografija (founded in 1997) is the only magazine about photography in Slovenia which deals with photography as an important element of contemporary visual culture. The magazine focuses primarily on contemporary photography theory and contemporary photography. With theoretical contributions, overviews, reviews, interviews, and portfolios the magazine represents an important source of knowledge on photography, photography theory and history, and last but not least on contemporary photographic production. The magazine includes interviews with major global and local photographers, columns and essays by renowned contemporary thinkers, longer contributions from the field of photography theory, portfolios of major photographers, reviews of domestic and foreign photographic monographs, reviews of the major theoretical works, translations of key theoretical articles and short stories and essays into the Slovenian language. A hallmark of the magazine is a sophisticated combination of images and text. The magazine is published bi-annually by Slovene non-profit institute Membrana. It is published in the Slovenian language with summaries of content and key words in Slovenian and English language.
